What is your take on the relationship between happiness and hardship?

Good day, y'all.

Last time we've talked about happiness.
In fact, I can't help but to think of the connection betweeen happiness and hardship. Why would people spend time in the library, lab, or garage for their study and project, rather than having fun as much as they can? Chinese confusian philosopher Mencius said:
"Thus when Heaven is going to give a great responsibility to someone, it first makes his mind endure suffering. It makes his sinews and bones experience toil, and his body to suffer hunger. It inflicts him with poverty and knocks down everything he tries to build. In this way Heaven stimulates his mind, stabilizes his temper and develops his weak points."

I firmly believe that in everyone's goal
to be happy, there will always be a certain situation or event wherein they'll face a certain challenge to 'work for it'. It's kinda like saying we will reap the fruits of our labor, after doing actual work.
In my personal opinion, I find obtaining happiness after hardships much more fulfilling than simply getting it out of privilege, etc. There's a much greater feeling of satisfaction when you know you've exerted effort and done your very best into something that's valuable to you.

I totally agree with Ryan.
I love the lyric of Japanese song like "The higher wall we climb, the better feeling we have" (終わりなき旅 song by Mr. children). My happiest moment in my life is when I could pass the entrance exam of high school. The school was challenging for me and I was unlikely to pass it. But I never gave up and kept studying hard because I really wanted to join the strong table tennis team. When I found my test number on the board of announcement of the test results, I felt a lump in my throat. I think I couldn't have such a feeling without hardship I never gave up and kept trying.

I checked out the song and I enjoyed it. Quite inspirating.
Reminds me of our Taiwanese top band Mayday which gives the similiar vibe.

I'm glad to hear that!
Ah. I've listened to 乾杯 but I hadn't watched the MV! I was totally moved by that. Thanks for your sharing, PM

Hello! I think this is a bit late, but today I got this quote from my phone app, and I feel like it matches this topic. I think it's quite the coincidence

I believe that people who go through such hardships realize that at the end of the road, they will find what they were looking for and that brings them joy. The quote also made me realize that it's not always about the goal, some people actually enjoy the thrill of the entire effort and hard work. That is why I think people try their hardest for the things that are important to them.
